I have witnessed this for the first time today. It was HUGE. It looked like a rainbow which formed a perfect circle around the sun. Sig.Ot was sun lounging and reading when he saw this in the sky and called out to me. He joked that it must have been that hole in the ozone!
The halo around the sun is caused by ice crystals 5-10km up in the sky. Sunlight is then refracted in hexagonal ice crystals.
Anyway it was spectacular and so perfect, it must be a good omen for all of us.
